Amália Rodrigues

Tribute to Amália Rodrigues

Amália Rebordão Rodrigues, (23 July 1920 – 6 October 1999), better known as Amália Rodrigues or popularly as Amália, was a Portuguese fadista (fado singer) and actress. Known as the ‘Rainha do Fado’ (“Queen of Fado”), Rodrigues was instrumental in popularising fado worldwide and travelled internationally throughout her career. She became one of the most important figures during the genre’s revival in the twentieth century and was a leading female fadista during her 50-year recording and stage career. Rodrigues remains an iconic figure and inspiration to other fado and popular music artists such as Madredeus, Dulce Pontes, Mariza and Cristina Branco. As of 1999, she had sold over 30 million records worldwide. Amália remains the best-selling Portuguese artist in history.

This year the Tribute to Amalia was on Saturday, October 1th with Jorge Fernando and Claudia Madur and their musicians from Portugal, Guilherme Banza, Frederico Gato e Bernardo Viana. In addition, from our community we also had Miguel Domingues, Clara Santos and their musicians Valdemar Madjubi, Pedro Joel and Hernani Raposo.

The Dress

Amália Rodrigues’ dress that is displayed in our lobby, was the dress she wore on her last concert. Frank Alvarez was approached by Amália’s Manager to purchase this dress. Intrigued by this proposition, he proposed the idea to the PCCM Board of Directors and gathered a group of Amália fans and friends from the community to sponsor the purchase this dress. He was able to gather 25 sponsors and they purchased the dress for $12,000. After the purchase of the dress, the same group collaborated with the Board of Directors to begin the Tribute to Amália Fado Gala, which has been an annual event since 2001.
